A 40-year-old Los Angeles man has been charged with rape and kidnapping in connection with the sexual assault of a woman who believed he was her Uber driver, the Los Angeles Times reports.Police say Carlos Pichinte had decals for both Lyft and Uber on his car—despite not working for either of those companies—when he picked up the victim May 13 in West Hollywood.
According to KABC, the victim believed Pichinte was the driver she had requested through Uber. Police say Pichinte drove the victim to Beverly Hills and sexually assaulted her.
Pichinte was identified through surveillance and arrested a week after the attack, according to police, who say he "may be connected to additional sexual assaults in the Los Angeles area."
On Monday, police asked other potential victims to come forward. “It’s definitely quite scary because you’re just getting into random cars,” one ride share user tells CBS Los Angeles.
Uber has admitted fake drivers are an issue in many cities, NBC Los Angeles reports.
The company advises its users make sure they've checked the driver and car information on the app before getting into a vehicle.
