A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her mother's boyfriend and suffered injuries so horrific she will have to undergo surgery.
Brentley Jason Byers, 28, was arrested and charged with raping the young girl on Saturday in Iredell County, North Carolina.
The girl's mother, who has four children including two with Byers, came home from work on Saturday to find her daughter sitting in a chair covered in blood.
Byers was nearby asleep on the couch, according to Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell.
The seven-year-old, who refers to Byers as her father, told her mother she had been sexually assaulted by him.
Byers had been left with all four young children when the mother went to work on Friday night.
Police say another family member came by on Friday night and picked up two of the children from the home.
Byers is suspected of raping the girl at some point during the night when it was just him and the two small children.
Investigators searched the home after being notified by their girl's mother.
They found clothing in the washing machine which made them believe Byers had tried to conceal evidence.
The girl was rushed to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem.
She suffered extensive injuries from the assault and will undergo surgery.
Byers was charged with statutory rape of a child by an adult. He is being held in jail on a $1 million bond.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and more charges are likely.
