17-year-old charged in rape, murder of 61-year-old woman
GARY — A 17-year-old has been waived to adult court to face charges connected to the rape, robbery and homicide of a 61-year-old mentally challenged woman in September 2015.
Calvin D. Poston, of Gary's Glen Park section, also was charged Monday in Lake Criminal Court in connection with an attempted rape and battery of a female "endangered adult" in November 2016.
The investigation into 61-year-old Carolyn Rimpson's death had gone cold until Hobart police Detective Jeremy Odgen, who joined the Lake County/Gary Metro Homicide Unit in January, took another look at the case, according to a news release from the Lake County prosecutor's office.
Rimpson's brother, Nathan Rimpson, reported her missing Sept. 24, 2015, after she went missing from her home near East 40th Avenue and Connecticut Street.
According to court records, Poston lives in the 4300 block of Pennsylvania Street, about a half mile from Rimpson's home.
Her body was found Sept. 29, 2015, in tall weeds and grass outside an abandoned home in the 4000 block of Broadway. She was wearing the same clothes she had on the day she disappeared, and she died from blunt force trauma to the head, police said.
Carolyn Rimpson was mentally challenged, but she went to work every day, went bowling on Mondays and attended church Wednesdays, Nathan Rimpson told The Times in 2015.
"She never messed with anyone," he said. "She was just a good girl."
The day she disappeared, she arrived home on a church bus and later walked down the block talking on her cellphone, her brother said.
Poston is accused of robbing Rimpson of a cellphone, raping her and killing her.
He's charged with felony murder, murder in the perpetration of a robbery, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, rape and criminal confinement in Rimpson's case.
In a separate case, Poston faces charges of felony attempted rape and battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a female endangered adult in an attack Nov. 29, 2016, court records said. The Times does not identify victims of sexual assault.
Poston was in custody Tuesday at the Lake County Jail. His bail was set at $55,000, according to court records.
Because Poston is a juvenile, his booking photo and affidavits in the two cases could not be released, officials at the Lake County Sheriff's Department and county clerk's office said.
