Sexual predator of male students sentenced to life

An Athens man began serving a life prison sentence this month for his conviction on charges he sexually preyed on male UGA students by plying them with alcohol and drugs, then sexually assaulting them after the victims passed out.

Following a one-week April trial, 28-year-old Andre Montez Jones was found guilty of aggravated sodomy, three counts of sodomy, two counts of sexual battery and one count of battery.
On May 5, the judge sentenced Jones to two consecutive life sentences, without the possibility of parole for the first 50 years, according to his sentencing document filed in Clarke County Superior Court.
Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Ken Mauldin said Thursday the punishment meted out to Jones was appropriate for his crimes.
Andre Montez Jones was a serial sexual predator who drugged and sexually assaulted numerous male victims over a period of time going back to at least 2013,” Mauldin said. “Five different victims named in the indictment testified at trial and two other males came forward prior to trial as similar victims and testified as well. All demonstrated outstanding inner strength, courage and composure. They have continued with their degrees or have graduated, but the event lingers and continues to cause considerable emotional stress to them, their families and relationships.”
Senior Assistant District Attorney Jon Forwood, who prosecuted the trial, was not available for comment Thursday.
According to Mauldin, Jones denied having contact with any of the victims until he was confronted with DNA evidence, which he claimed got on the victims through consensual contact.
Seven victims who testified during the trial told jurors of events dating to December 2013.
“All of the victims described being at a bar with friends, encountering Jones at the bar and Jones buying and providing them drinks,” Mauldin said. “Then they all had no memory of anything until they awaken in his bed, naked, with him performing oral sex on them.
Jones, held at the county jail from the time he was arrested in 2013, was transferred May 16 to the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State prison in Butts County, which houses death-row inmates and inmates considered the state’s most aggressive and dangerous.
Athens-Clarke County police have said Jones befriended some UGA students through their mutual interest in the sport of competitive Frisbee.
According to court filings, Jones would accompany his victims to bars in downtown Athens, and “consuming different alcoholic beverages with (Jones) was the last memory of each victim” prior to them waking up in Jones’s bed. According to documents, Jones gave one or more of his victims Tramadol, a narcotic that causes drowsiness when taken with alcohol.
Jones’ predatory crimes came to light in December 2015, after a shirtless 18-year-old UGA student with a bloody nose and other injuries was seen wandering around downtown, asking people to call police. He later told police he was physically assaulted by Jones at the suspect’s apartment on Willow Street.
He said he had just completed a final exam the night before when he accepted Jones’ invitation to come over and watch a Netflix movie, police said. The student told police Jones gave him a beer that was already opened, and the next thing he could remember was waking up naked in Jones’ bed being sexually assaulted by his host.
The student reportedly told Jones he was not gay and “didn’t do things like that,” at which time Jones started beating him and then took his phone. The student ran from the apartment building to seek help.
Police said when they met with the student, he was shirtless, had a bloody nose, swollen eye and numerous scratches on his neck, face and elsewhere. He requested an ambulance because he felt like he might have a concussion, police said, and was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division went to Jones’ apartment and arrested him on charges of aggravated sodomy with force and battery.
The first indication there might be other victims came Dec. 16, after OnlineAthens.com reported Jones’ arrest.
In the reader comments section at OnlineAthens, someone calling themselves Long Arm of the Law posted:
“Yay! A friend of mine reported this menace a couple years ago but was so badly drugged that no one paid attention to him. When ACC police stopped to help him in a similar circumstance, Jones was released while my friend was taken into jail for underage possession. I wish there was a way to increase this guy’s sentence because he’s caused a lot of harm around Athens. I also hope that ACC will pay further attention to their victims and not lock away college students who were just assaulted.”
Additional victims then came forward and told their stories to police.
