KANPUR: Three policemen, including a sub inspector (SI), were injured, and several vehicles damaged at Barra highway after protestors resorted to stone-pelting on Saturday. The crowd was protesting the rape of a teenage girl, and protestors turned violent after security forces tried to disperse them.
The crowd was agitating to demand action against the Jagriti Hospital where the girl was raped by a ward boy.
The accused was arrested on Friday soon after the FIR was lodged. But protestors gathered at the highway demanding immediate sealing of the hospital.
Police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the crowd, following which the protestors started throwing stones on the police. Three policemen sustained injuries in the day-long violence, DIG Sonia Singh confirmed.
The SI posted at Fazalganj police station and the two police constables were shifted to a private hospital. They are under observation in ICU," a senior police officer said, adding that police resorted to lathi charge as protestors were disrupting traffic at one of the busiest highways, causing inconvenience to commuters.
The agitators, however, have blamed police for the violence. An eyewitness told TOI that traffic was not disrupted during the protest and it was the policemen who had attacked the protesters.
The policemen misbehaved with women demonstrators, which led to altercation, a protester said.
